How much dancing at your Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah?

SHALL WE DANCE?

It’s your bar or bat mitzvah, you have all your friends with you, and you love music and dancing along to favourite tracks, but how much bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah dancing should you include in your special event?

This is a commonly asked question and one, we think, is about striking the right balance. If there’s too much opportunity for dancing, you could be left with an empty dance floor – too little and your guests could feel underwhelmed.

Perhaps it’s helpful here to break the evening up into its various sections and look at the amount of dancing that works well for each part.

THE RECEPTION

Everyone’s catching up with people they may not have seen for a while, there’s a general melee of chit chat while the canapes, champagne and soft drinks are passed around.

The music should be in the background, low, understated, non-invasive and gentle to enable everybody to hear themselves.

Your bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah event is just starting off, so you need to build it up slowly.

MAKING AN ENTRANCE

As you, the bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah, make your special entrance and are received into the room, you’ll have your special track playing, which leads into the customary Israeli dancing.

Again, you need to find the right balance here. Too little and people may be disappointed – too much and others could feel slightly burdened in having to continue being up on their feet.

We think ten is the magic number. Ten minutes of Israeli dancing should be fine, it starts off the evening, loosens the atmosphere and sets the tone. Of course, depending on the age and enthusiasm of your guests you could increase it to 15 or 20 minutes, or even cut it to five if you think best, but ten seems to work well.

Dance The Night Away

AFTER DINNER DANCING

After dinner dancing raises the energy for the evening. Your guests have been seated for anything up to an hour and this is a great way to get everyone on their feet and on the dance floor.

Half an hour to 35 minutes with some up tempo, party vibe style dancing is perhaps the right amount of time to get people active and in the mood without anyone feeling it’s all too much.

Dance The Night Away

AFTER DESSERT & SPEECHES

As this is the main section of dancing, you want to go all out and increase the level to perhaps an hour up to one hour and twenty minutes. Any more and it could all become too much with people wondering when it’s going to end.

Don’t forget, people only dance for around 20 minutes to half an hour before they’re likely to want to go and get a drink, so if you’re not careful you could end up with a few lonesome die heart dancers while everyone else has wandered off.

So make it around an hour – perhaps up to one hour and twenty minutes – this will give everyone a chance to take a break, come back and enjoy their evening without looking at their watch and getting bored. Then you’ll need a couple of tracks to wind it down before closing with your finale.

The Event of a Lifetime

SUMMARY

To get the balance right, break your evening up into sections with types and lengths of dance music to keep everyone entertained and enjoying themselves.

Of course you could play it by ear, cut short the time for dinner and throw in the dancing much earlier, but make sure your DJ, band, singers or musicians can cope with the adjustment easily. You want the evening to flow well, the music and dancing to run smoothly and for everyone to make your special occasion memorable for the right reasons.

Events by Knight have extensive experience of planning, designing, creating and staging bar and bat mitzvahs and know what works well, and equally what might not.

We’ll always be delighted to work with you to ensure your milestone celebration is expertly managed with everything running smoothly on the day.
