CAN I CHOOSE THE MUSIC?

Mum and Dad might like to have the last word on this, but yes, it’s your event and you deserve to have the music you want at your bar or bat mitzvah. Read through the lyrics beforehand though, make sure it’s appropriate for all the family.

I love Grime music, but is it suitable?

Grime is a tricky genre of music to play for open dance floors. We know it’s popular with the younger generation, but the fast, rather aggressive style of bass and break beats doesn’t appeal to everyone. Adults don’t tend to understand or even like grime music, and even the kids only seem to dance to one or two tracks, so perhaps it’s worth mixing it up a bit.

If you really want grime music all evening, why not opt for a silent disco event? That’ll give you the best of both worlds – those who enjoy grime can enjoy it on one channel while the adults can dance along to old school classics on another channel. Perfect!

CHEESY vs COOL MUSIC

You can have as much cheesy or as much cool bar mitzvah & bat mitzvah music as you want. Remember, it’s your celebration, so whatever your style, pick out those favourite tracks and have fun.

So if not everyone likes the same kind of music, how do I get the balance right?

This is important. In an ideal world, we’d all love to dance away to the hits of our pop idols and forget about all else, but you don’t really want any of your family or friends to feel left out of the scene. You need to strike some kind of a balance here and include tracks that everyone’s heard of. Think popular radio station style, something like Capital FM or Kiss FM and you won’t go far wrong. Commercial music to get everyone up on the dance floor, creating a vibe and enjoying themselves.

KEY TRACKS & PLAYLISTS

Entrance Songs

As we’ve said, it’s your event and you should choose something you like, but if your bar mitzvah evening or bat mitzvah evening has a dedicated theme it would be great to include a track that ties in with that.

A theme tune from a movie perhaps? A top ten chart hit that’s currently popular? Why not make your entrance with a song associated with a hobby, sport or favourite TV programme? An entrance is a memorable part of the evening, so if you’re going to do it, make it enjoyable and fun.

End of  Night Songs

Again, always a matter of personal style and preference, but to bring an evening to a close, we’ve found that people love to hear the track, ‘Salaam.’ It’s a great way to bring everybody together and promote a closing peaceful message. But don’t think that’s what you have to choose.

It’s your event, so you can select bar mitzvah & bat mitzvah music which has a special significance to you. It might be emotional, it might be rousing, it might be chosen to honour a parent, or a grandparent. There’s really no rights or wrongs.

FINALISING YOUR PLAYLIST

You don’t want to do this too soon. Although bar & bat mitzvahs do have to be planned a long time in advance to secure venues, caterers, prepare speeches and learn everything you need, bar mitzvah & bat mitzvah music is one of the things you can leave more or less to the last minute.

One or two weeks before your event should be fine, otherwise you run the risk of continually changing your mind and having to update your list. Check with your DJ or band though, because if you’re going for live music, they’ll appreciate a bit of extra time to arrange music and prepare.

We hope these tips will help you to plan the right type of music for your bar or bat mitzvah celebration. Don’t forget, Events by Knight will always be delighted to work with you to ensure your special day is perfectly planned, designed, and put together.
