The Northumberland Avenue Hotel Company wanted to build a500-room grand hotel, with fabulous restaurants and bars that would exceed the expectations of sophisticated Victorian travellers. It most certainly did exceed all expectations and was built with the latest technology including electric lights, speaking tubes for communication and both hot and cold running water.
In 1887, it was completed and launched as the Hotel Victoria and this beautiful building was one of the finest within the Gordon Hotels group. The Gordon Hotels group acquired the hotel after the original developer went bust.
The hotel soon gained an excellent reputation as a banqueting venue and dinner contracts were drawn up with groups such as the Institute of Civil Engineers.
The hotel has a rich history and became in demand as a space for companies such as Cadbury’s and the UK Tea Company to display their goods to guests. The Ministry of War took over the building in 1939 and the restaurant area was used as a computer room for strategic planning during the war.
In 2009, Charles Boyd and Adrian Brain set up the building as an event venue now known as 8 Northumberland Avenue. Both Charles and Adrian have many years of top class catering experience and have served exclusive clients that even include the Queen.
